Atheists Love Fun!

He's having fun - smoking and stinking of tobacco.
He's having fun - having sex with various average looking women and then wondering what that rash he keeps getting is and why it burns when he urinates.
He's having fun - drinking all night and waking up in mid-day depressed and with a splitting headache.
He's having fun - masturbating while using the Internet to the point where he is having difficulty ever functioning sexually at all.
He's having fun - taking more and more prescription pain pills, which make him more and more sick, to try and fight off his depression.
He's having fun - being poor because he can't hold a job.
He's having fun - being alone, because he's so selfish no one wants to be around him.
He's having so much fun that he wishes he were dead.

Wow this post perfectly describes Athiests and Agnostics like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Natalie Portman, James Cameron and others. Just looking at the people I listed above and then at such successful and happy people like Jacob Stein I am forced to conclude that the only way to be successful is by believing in God. I wouldn't want to be a poor loser like Bill gates or Warren Buffet when I could be like Jacob Stein!

This post specifies "atheists".

I don't find any explicit commitment anywhere to atheism.

Wow, I'm glad a read this. As an atheist, now I know how I am supposed to behave. Thanks!

Here is an Agnostic's way of having fun:

Having fun - having a hour of intense practise of martial arts at dojo instead of smoking and wasting my body
Having fun - having good sex with my legally wedded husband
Having fun - enjoying good wine, good whisky or good cognac with good meal
Having fun - participating in an intelligent conversation in the Internet
Having fun - going out to the sea to sail to get excercize and fresh air to keep both my mind and body sound
Having fun - having a decent, well paying job
Having fun - with friends, some dating back to childhood
Having so much fun that when it's time to kick the bucket I can say I've lived to the fullest

Ironmistress said...

If Christianity is the opium of the masses, Buddhism is marijuana of the fringes and Islam is amphetamine of the dregs. Atheism is vodka - an enjoyment to the intelligent and an intoxicant to the stupid.

Agnosticism is beer for the wise - bland enough to be drunk as beverage with food, but intoxicating enough to make content.

jewish philosopher said...

Agnosticism is a transitional stage between monotheism and atheism. It's not as completely far gone.

Ironmistress said...

JP, it is not transitional state. It is admitting we do not know if there are deities or not and that we have absolutely no means of knowing.

jewish philosopher said...

It's similar to Scandinavians who for a certain period worshipped Thor and Jesus. You can make a combination cross and hammer symbol. Eventually people go one way or the other. I don't think that agnosticism is a stable community.

Anonymous said...

JP. Aren't you the one with no job and a block on your internet to keep you on the kosher sites?

jewish philosopher said...

Actually, no.

And can anyone be identified who has dropped out of orthodox Judaism since 1960 (meaning that their motive was probably sex not money) who today has a job, a spouse and a child from that spouse?

Ironmistress said...

JP, no. That is Opportunism, not Agnosticism.

Buddhism is an example of Agnostic religion. It does not deny the existence of deities nor admit them - it refuses to have any stand and states that no deities can save us, we have to do it by ourselves. [Buddhism also refutes Nihilsm, BTW.]

jewish philosopher said...

Buddhists don't call themselves agnostics.

Can you site any examples of third generation agnostics?

ksil said...

"can anyone be identified who has dropped out of orthodox Judaism since 1960 "

is this a joke?

I grew up in a very small modern orthodox community in the 70s and 80s and more than half of my friends are either non-observant or orthoprax - most are succefull business people, teachers, lawyers, 2 doctors....all but 1 is married with kids (most have 2-3)

whenever i see them they look as happy as can be (happier than the still frum ones, to be honest) and they are lucky to have the parents they do, still accepting of them, open homes, etc.

Ironmistress said...

The Huxley family, for example. The line counting from Thomas Huxley, "Darwin's Bulldog", is going today on the fifth generation (eight if you count the youngest grandchildren), having produced scientists and writers on each generation.

I can call myself a third generation Agnostic on father's side.

jewish philosopher said...

Care to verify that?

I might add:

Atheist are having fun: feeling miserable that nature is a bad thing and the world is a bad place to live in. (contrary to Jewish belief that God has created and leads the world in a perfectly fine manner).

Atheist are having fun: thinking life has no purpose, thus when having a rough day they feel miserable that a day has been wasted from their lives. (contrary to Jewish belief that for every hardship we have now a much longer and more pleasant time awaits us in our future).

Atheists are having fun: believing that they're nothing but robots with no free will, and they don't have any control over their lives, let alone their long term destiny.

Has it ever occured to you that you may be as narrow minded and bigoted as you think everyone else is?

jewish philosopher said...

"The Huxley family, for example."

Could you give me some documentation on this? My guess is that after a generation or two people will turn either to atheism or monotheism.

ksil said...

"Care to verify that?"

what does that mean?

jewish philosopher said...

Exactly what I said.

The most deprave form of slavery is one which brainwashes the slaves themselves to love their lot.

What you cite is known in psychology as cognitive dissonance, colloquially as "Stockholm Syndrome". Those who have recovered from their brainwash do not take the lot of Islamic women lightly.

Avi Bitterman said...

Oh dear.

I don't drink, smoke or do drugs. They are bad for cardiovascular fitness and decrease your VO2 max.

I don't have sex with average looking women - I'm far too picky for that.

I don't drink. Alcohol activates an enzyme known as Aromatase which converts testosterone to estrogen; bad for my physique.

My masturbation is calculated to alleviate stress, as well as prevent the buildup of aged prostate fluids. It is neither too frequent, nor too rare.

I am on no prescription pills. My lifestyle of fitness has allowed me to get by without needing those drugs.

I went through my undergraduate studies holding three jobs and I've recently gotten accepted into medical school - I think I'm disciplined enough to hold a job.

Being alone? Nah - too many frum friends for that.

You can verify all of this if you like. You don't live that far away from me. Stop by for a visit sometime.

Ironmistress said...

Yeah, surely women love getting hanged, stoned or beheaded for any petty misdemeanours like failing to hide their faces behind sackcloth. And sure they like being imprisoned in their own homes, being under the whims and quirks of the menfolks of their family and they also love getting murdered for the family honour.

The "Princess" series by Jean Sasson is a healthy reality check on women living in theocracy.

Ironmistress said...

JP, my paternal family is an example of producing Agnostics from generation to generation. Not Atheists.

If you're wondering, one can be an agnostic and atheist. The two words are defining two separate things. To be gnostic on a subject means you claim to know something about a subject. To be agnostic is to claim that you do not know something. An agnostic atheist would be an atheist who does not know that there are no gods, but does not believe in them.

Short of that, this sad little blog post is one of two things. Either it is an attempt to degrade another group you disagree with to help you feel better about your own beliefs or it is you trolling. One or the other really. At the end of the day, I'm still just an atheist enjoying life with the people I care about. Either that won't get through your barrier of bigotry towards another group or you don't really care because you are trolling.

jewish philosopher said...

"The most deprave form of slavery is one which brainwashes the slaves themselves to love their lot."

Brainwashing is apparently is a myth fabricated by the CIA during the Korean war.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Anthony#Involvement_in_the_brainwashing_debate

"colloquially as "Stockholm Syndrome"."

Apparently also a myth.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norrmalmstorg_robbery#Myths_of_the_Norrmalmstorg_robbery

"I don't drink, smoke or do drugs."

Yet. Likewise in regard to the rest of the list.

I've actually only found one documented case of an atheist who seems to have been a nice man, and he regretted being an atheist.

http://www.torahphilosophy.com/2008/01/chandra-good-atheist.html

There is logic to that. Being an atheist but not being a psychopath is similar to buying a Mercedes but never driving it. What's the point?

"Yeah, surely women love getting hanged, stoned or beheaded for any petty misdemeanours like failing to hide their faces behind sackcloth."

Everything has a downside. The truth is that orthodox Jewish women seem to suffer a remarkably low level of physical abuse, however most societies, including very "enlightened" ones, seem to have major problems with women being attacked by men.

"JP, my paternal family is an example of producing Agnostics from generation to generation. Not Atheists."

Why do people bother posting things which can't be verified?

"Either it is an attempt to degrade another group you disagree with to help you feel better about your own beliefs or it is you trolling."

It's an attempt to pursue potential atheists not to ruin their lives.

Why do you say "he"? I know of a female atheist

I know many orthodox Jews who smoke and stink of tobacco.

Why do you specify that the women are "average looking"? would it be better if they were good looking?

How much masturbation do you consider acceptable?

Nobody's going to give you any information to verify after the crap you pulled with Tova. But I don't care at all. Believe what you like. I can't make you more intelligent.

Interesting points (as usual) JP:

Couple of impressions:

For sure some Orthodox Jews smoke.
For sure some avail themselves of porn.
For sure some pay for extra-marital activity.
For sure some drink hard liquor.
For sure some are poor.

But I do agree they do not spend a lot of time alone! And I am certain that these vices are NOT found equally in every Orthodox community.

"I know of a female atheist"

In October of 2010, an atheists' meeting was organized in the United States concerning the future direction of the atheist movement and 370 people attended. The New York Times described the attendees as "The largely white and male crowd — imagine a Star Trek convention, but older...".

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/16/us/16beliefs.html

"Nobody's going to give you any information to verify after the crap you pulled with Tova."

Tova Schreiber is a deranged woman who says she's being "raped" if she fails an exam because she didn't study. I think it's pretty obvious why nearly all Internet atheists are anonymous - they're embarrassed.

I am an Orthodx Jew and I am embarrassed from the article's language. We believe in cleaner speech, even if you are right about the argument. The language is inappropriate for Orthodox Jews

You're making an interesting point. My attitude is that if you would not read the New York Times you should not read this blog. You don't need it in any case if you are that sheltered. In fact, if you are that sheltered (and I congratulate and I am jealous of anyone who is) then you aren't using the Internet at all.

My husband; the atheist

He's having fun - spending time with his family, playing with his children.
He's having fun - having sex with me
He's having fun - going to be at night after working hard all day, that way he can be fresh and rested ready for the next day.
He's having fun - making love to me, his wife.
He's having fun - being healthy
He's having fun - working hard to provide for his family, at a job that he loves.
He's having fun - spending time with his family all around him and his friends who value him.
He's having so much fun that he knows that this life is the only one he has so he makes the most of the time he has got.
