The Coolidge Effect and How to Defeat It

[thanks Calvin]

One instinct common to all mammals (including humans) is known as the Coolidge Effect. This refers to the tendency of the male to be significantly more sexually aroused by a female whom he has not yet had sex with than he is aroused by a female whom he has already had sex with.

For example if a male rat is placed into an enclosed large box with four or five female rats in estrus, he will immediately begin mating with all of the female rats repeatedly until eventually exhausted. Although the females will continue nudging and licking him to continue, he will not respond. However, if a novel female were introduced to the box, he would become alert and find the ability to mate once again with the new female. New is more arousing than used. Similar tendencies are found in all other mammals.

Today, thanks to Internet pornography, men are able to have "sex" (in their imaginations) with an endless stream of new women. This can lead to a complete lack of interest in real women, besides becoming a serious addiction similar to cocaine.

Orthodox Judaism prohibits any sexual stimulation outside of marriage. Therefore the Coolidge Effect presents an enormous challenge to Orthodox men in the modern, sexually promiscuous, Internet wired world. I would suggest that this may be the greatest challenge to Orthodox Judaism today.

Making vows can be a very powerful means of controlling oneself. Each week one can read a list of vows along the lines of:

I hereby accept upon myself that if later this week or next week I knowingly unblock any webpage from Net Nanny software I will be required to fast 1 day during this month of --------- or next month of -----------.

In some cases, medication may be helpful.

In addition, heartfelt prayer for divine assistance is very important.

Atheists Have a License to Kill

[the "happy face" killer]

I know this because an atheist and a killer says so.

Keith Jesperson is a serial killer who brutally murdered eight random women between 1990 and 1995.

According to his biography I: the Creation of a Serial Killer page 92 he later explained that after he had dumped his third victim on a garbage pile, he realized "It looked like I would never be punished by God or Satan. I decided there was no God or Satan, and when we died our lives just flickered out. The sooner a person understands that there's no punishment after death and allows his own inner impulses to take over, the sooner they become an unstoppable serial killer. That's the point I'd reached. It was scary, but it was exciting too."

Don't Trust High IQ

[the genius in his prime]

I recently read a fascinating book about the famous chess champion, Bobby Fischer.

One point that struck me is that although Fischer's IQ was incredibly high, about 180, meaning he was one of a handful of the most intelligent people in the United States, many of his personal beliefs were very bizarre. As a teenager, he became devoted to the somewhat unusual  Radio Church of God (renouncing it finally in his late 20's). In addition to that, he was a fanatic neo-Nazi although he was Jewish.

It's important to realize that a person may be extremely intelligent, yet never the less believe in a lot of silly nonsense. One must always look at facts and not be impressed by this or that authority, however brilliant or talented.

Suspect Your Spouse Is Keeping Secrets?

[new "find my friends" app]

Suspect no more. The iPhone can tell you if your husband is at the local Talmud class or the local strip club.

Also great for tracking teenagers.

Near Death Experience

An interesting proof of the afterlife is the phenomena of near death experiences.

I believe that NDEs are brief glimpses of the afterlife experienced by people who are physically dead (no pulse) and then are later revived. I believe that these experiences are basically accurate and authentic, although the experiencers tend to interpret them to some degree according to their own religious backgrounds.

Millions of Americans have reported these experiences. They confirm the existence of the soul, the afterlife and the existence of a loving God, all concepts taught by orthodox Judaism.

The idea that these experiences are merely hallucinations caused by some chemical reactions in the oxygen deprived brain seems implausible. Hallucinations never cause radical positive life changes. No one has ever woken up from a ketamine experience for example and decided to stop practicing law and devote his life to working in a homeless shelter. Radical improvements in behavior are however common after an NDE. This leads me to believe that these experiences are real contacts with a spiritual world, which confirm several basic Jewish beliefs, rather than merely hallucinations.

Our Amazing Scientists

[alleged perv]

Kimberly Lindsey, Supervisory Health Scientist, serves as the Deputy Director for the Laboratory Science Policy and Practice Program Office (LSPPPO) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Lindsey received her doctoral degree in immunology and molecular pathogenesis from Emory University and her bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from the University of Central Florida.

The scientist was arrested yesterday for sex acts involving herself, her boyfriend, a six year old boy and an animal.

Of course these are the same type of scientists whose belief in evolution we mere laymen must accept without question.
