A Portrait of a Professor

[Amy Bishop assistant professor of biology at the University of Alabama in Huntsville]

According to news reports, Professor Bishop was charged yesterday morning with capital murder. At a faculty meeting on Friday afternoon, she allegedly drew a gun and shot to death three other professors. Apparently, she was angry because the university was about to terminate her.

This is exactly the type of person whom atheists trust regarding the truth of evolution, whether they, the atheists, understand it or not. After all, how could such geniuses be mistaken?

I've noticed that one of the Jewish skeptic blogs is doing a weekly "news roundup" featuring anything negative they can scrape up regarding Orthodox Jews. I wonder if anyone is doing the same for biology professors? It might make interesting reading.

No more than religionists trust Ayatolla Khonemnei, Ibn Laden, or 16th century popes.

You're doing the same silly thing that you're accusing skeptics of doing-- straw men.

I've never answered a question about Judaism by saying "All the great rabbis believed in the Torah so it must be true."

Atheists constantly insist "All the great scientists accept evolution so it must be true."

Could it be that great scientists may have some major ethical problems?

I don't take evolution by faith. I observed the evidence, and made my decision. You should as well. If you are ever in NYC, go to the American Museum of Natural History's Bernard Spitzer Hall of Human Origins, and the Hall of Biodiversity. That's what I did.

I've explained the fossils

and refuted evolution

But atheists don't care because "all the scientists believe it, they can't be wrong."

It's just fascinating to compare Amy Bishop to let's say Yehudah Kolko.

Yehudah Kolko was a teacher for many years in a private Jewish elementary school in Brooklyn. He was accused of sexually abusing several students. In 2008, he was convicted of misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2008/04/15/2008-04-15_rabbi_avoids_jail_on_molest_rap.html

This man was never the leader of an Orthodox Jewish community and he was not a renowned Talmudic scholar and he was never convicted of a felony.

However the anti-Orthodox writers have not stopped writing about him for years, trying to squeeze every bit of propaganda value from an Orthodox second grade teacher convicted of a misdemeanor.

Will it faze these same anti-Orthodox writers when one of their great authorities is put to death for mass murder? Probably not.

Philo said...

It's not only about fossils. They are an element of the evidence, when combined with the massive DNA evidence that we have.

Philo said...

JP,

The reason why we pushed the Kolko story so much, was not because of Kolko, but because of the massive cover-up that took place over 20 years. It implicated many great "gedolim" such as Israel Belsky and that baal guyvah who wears a hundred pairs of tzitius and I can't remember his name.

jewish philosopher said...

"the massive DNA evidence"

Which you saw at the American Museum of Natural History?

"the massive cover-up that took place over 20 years"

Well, in that case I think you really better get on this Bishop case. Looks like she killed her brother in 1986. No doubt many professors have been covering up her nutty, violent behavior over 24 years.

Oh, but I forgot. Atheists have no interest in discrediting universities and scientists, only yeshivas and rabbis.

Kolko convicted of misdemeanor - proof that all rabbis are evil.

Bishop executed for mass murder - proof of nothing.

That's logical.

Philo said...

Yes they are in the Spitzer Hall of Human Origins.

From what I have been hearing it was ruled an accidental death.

No one said the Kolko case proved all Rabbi's are evil. I have tremendous respect for people like Rabbi David Wolpe and Eric Yoffe.

jewish philosopher said...

You mean chimps have DNA similar to humans?

http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/permanent/humanorigins/past/dna.php

iPhones may have electronics similar to iPods, proving nothing about common ancestry.

"I have been hearing it was ruled an accidental death"

I have been hearing Kolko never had a sex with any kids.

"No one said the Kolko case proved all Rabbi's are evil."

Just about.

"On the Rabbi's Knee Do the Orthodox Jews have a Catholic-priest problem?"

http://nymag.com/news/features/17010/

So I'm certain that we'll see next month's cover story in New York magazine:

"The Professor's Gun: Do Scientists Have a Nazi mass murder problem?"

Right. I'll hold my breath.

Philo said...

Yes they do! iPod Touch and iPhone's are made with similar technology, just one is able to make phone calls and text, the other does not. We share 98% of chimp DNA, and our fossil record intercepts each other.

jewish philosopher said...

The iPhone and iPod were both made by engineers and people and chimps were both made by God. No evolution involved.

Philo said...

Oh no here goes the old argument from design again.....

jewish philosopher said...

It's awful isn't it - this whole God thing, which means that you owe someone something, you have to listen to a divine creator whether you want to a not.

What a buzzkill.

Philo said...

I don't know if this is the 50th time or the 100th time I have said I was not an atheist.

Religion has caused untold suffering.

Atheists broke free from the bible's primitive morality and allowed progress.

Religion stops progress.

Individual atheists and religious people can do bad things, because they are human. But only religion oppresses people because of religion itself.

Larry Tanner said...

Ach, she may have taught EVOLUTION in her classes? Oh, well, evolution MUST be wrong if she was teaching it. After all, she was apparently a nut-job and killed her colleagues who decided that she wasn't going to be awarded tenure.

But since she may or may not have been teaching EVOLUTION in school (to adults), well then I hereby renounce the whole EVOLUTION thing. Obviously, she killed those people because of EVOLUTION. Right? What other explanation can there be, besides the old standby, "God did it"?

All this time, she had been winning those awards for being THE ethical champion of people who think EVOLUTION is more likely to be correct than any other explanation currently out there (because the evidence points in that direction).

But now, the evidence for EVOLUTION doesn't matter. All that matters is that SHE DID A VERY BAD THING -- and she may have taught EVOLUTION to adults in classes. Whatever she taught in class was obviously wrong. Oh, I hope she wasn't a THEISTIC EVOLUTIONIST!!

So, even though EVOLUTION is not a theory that professes to have any sort of moral authority, I'm renouncing it. Yes, strictly speaking EVOLUTION only professes to explain the development of species, but let's not think too much about this.

Now Judaism does, of course, announce itself as being able to tell people how exactly they ought to behave. Jews are supposed to act as examples of good behavior to the rest of the dirty, gentile world.

Judaism tells us whom to hate and how to hate them. As JP loves to point out, hate's great! Judaism tells us what to eat and whom to admire - no matter how many people such admirable folk as Moses have murdered.

(And no matter that many such folk never actually lived.)

So, you got me back in the fold, JP. I'm with you my brother. You and me, we're true Jew all the way. Let's start studying Kabbalah together and pretend that it's not nonsense.

Can I get an A-MEN?

Larry Tanner said...

Philo -

Don't you get it? Getting facts straight doesn't matter to JP. He is either incapable or unwilling to admit even the slightest fact that starts to unravel the fantasy of religion (in general) and Judaism (in particular). He's bright enough to know that one fact faced squarely and honestly begins to shatter his desperate need to assert the private orthodoxy he was never born into.

jewish philosopher said...

"Atheists broke free from the bible's primitive morality and allowed progress."

Like building Auschwitz. Well done.

"Religion stops progress."

If murder is progress.

"But only religion oppresses people because of religion itself."

At this moment atheist Chinese Communists are killing Tibetan Buddhists.

http://www.members.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/DEL255383.htm

Philo said...

JP-

The Chinese are not killing the Tibetans in the name of atheism.

Larry-

That is a very probable conclusion. If JP can just accept it's all blind faith, that would be enough for me.

jewish philosopher said...

Tanner, just check this tidbit out from our own famous Jewish Atheist (whoever he really is)

"Why hadn't all the smartest, best, and most learned people in the world converted to Orthodox Judaism if it's so obvious that we were right?"

http://jewishatheist.blogspot.com/2005/06/what-kind-of-atheist-am-i.html

Maybe, just maybe, because they are busy doing good deeds like shooting people who bug them? I wonder if atheists ever think of that option?

jewish philosopher said...

"The Chinese are not killing the Tibetans in the name of atheism."

Sure they are. As the founder of the Soviet state, Lenin put it: Religion is the opium of the people: this saying of Marx is the cornerstone of the entire ideology of Marxism about religion. All modern religions and churches, all and of every kind of religious organizations are always considered by Marxism as the organs of bourgeois reaction, used for the protection of the exploitation and the stupefaction of the working class.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_the_Soviet_Union#Policy_toward_religions_in_practice

Atheists kill Buddhists just like Christians killed Muslims and Muslims kill Hindus. They want to win.

Philo said...

That is correct. They are killing them of communism and totalitarianism, not atheism ALONE.

Larry Tanner said...

JP,

The fact of it all is that three people were killed because of that woman. I don't much care whether those three people were atheists, jews, evolutionists, hindus or anything else. They died needlessly and their families deserve sympathy. The shooter (or alleged shooter) deserves a fair trial and (I hope) fair punishment.

I no longer want to use this awful event to score some points in a stupid religion/atheism discussion.

Those three people had families and friends who are grieving right now.

Philo said...

Because they are not killing people because they are atheists, and they want to rid the world of God physically. While religious terrorists like Baruch Goldstein (I'm using a religious Jew because it is relevant) did it so they can whipe out another faith in the name of theirs.

jewish philosopher said...

"not atheism ALONE."

So atheists kill as much if not more than other religious believers, however their motives are somehow less sinister because they are more materialistic. Wonderful. Who cares?

"I no longer want to use this awful event to score some points in a stupid religion/atheism discussion."

Just save it for the next time someone wonders "If evolution is crazy, why do scientists endorse it? Would scientists be so unethical to lie for the sake of their own benefit?"

Well, yeah.

JP, you let me know when those atheist biology professors start explaining to everyone that they are the chosen ones and are holier and better than everyone else because they were born with a special atheist neshama, the pintele Darwin.

Then their evil, immoral acts will be somewhat relevant to your point.

It's worth noting that Professor Bishop was not exactly a scientific leader and that's what she was angry about.

This entry exemplifies the ad hominem attacks which characterize this blog.

I guess you can get tired of repeating the watchmaker analogy over and over again, so you have to add some variety.

Philo said...

Hopefully it is becoming obvious what I am trying to do here. I'm trying to sort of kick the stupid arguments away, and see what I really differ with JP on, and then try to have an honest debate, I don't count the stupidity, which probably makes up a good 40% of his comments and his replies, and this post is an example. Lets the rid the crap, and start over.

jewish philosopher said...

"let me know when those atheist biology professors start explaining to everyone that they are the chosen ones and are holier and better than everyone else"

They do.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Is_Not_Great

"Bishop was not exactly a scientific leader"

It's sounds like her science was good but her teaching didn't cut it.

"This entry exemplifies the ad hominem attacks which characterize this blog."

And every other blog.

But the noggest mass murderers were atheists, and a disproportionate number of mass murderers were atheists, and every time time they run a coutry, they commit mass murder. So atheism measn more mass murder; theism, less mass murder.

I don't think that the two are connected. There are lots of good people who don't believe in G-d, adn there are lost of awful people who don't believe in G-d. I think that it's a bit ridiculous to use her as an example of how atheism isn't true.

As a member of American Mensa, I know from member surveys that only about 4.5% of our members are atheists. Intellectually gifted people seem to be about as diverse spiritually as the population in general.
